How SOE Score Works

SOE calculates your personal sustainability score (0–100) across 11 evidence-based pillars in about 5 minutes. Your carbon footprint is measured from real quantities using published national emission factors for your region, not estimated from a quiz. The methodology follows the GHG Protocol, the Science Based Targets initiative and the UN SDGs.

How Your Score Is Built

Measure

Your carbon footprint is calculated, not estimated from a personality quiz. Real quantities — kilowatt-hours, kilometres, cylinders of cooking gas, cubic metres of water — are converted using published national emission factors for your region.

Assess

The remaining pillars are structured assessments of behaviour: what you buy, how you dispose of it, where your money sits, and what you do professionally and in your community.

Weight by evidence

How much your score is trusted depends on what you can back up. Document-backed figures and peer endorsements count for more than unsupported claims, and a score gets less confident as it ages.

Two rules hold throughout. Only measured impact counts — using the app, logging in or collecting streaks never moves your score. And questions you were never asked are excluded rather than scored as zero, so a short assessment gives you an honest score over less ground rather than a penalised one.

What We Ask About

The core assessment is about 25 questions and takes roughly five minutes. It covers your home and its energy, how you get around, what you eat, what you buy, your water use, and your work. Optional depth sections afterwards let you add detail wherever you want a sharper answer.

Built for where you actually live

Emission factors are regional, so the same behaviour is scored against the electricity grid and fuel supply you really use. That changes real answers rather than just decimal places: on a grid dominated by renewables an electric hob is the lower-carbon way to cook, while on a coal-heavy grid a gas cylinder is. We also ask about cooking fuels the rest of the world actually uses — LPG cylinders, piped gas, kerosene, biogas and firewood — instead of assuming everyone has a gas meter.

Weights are read directly from the scoring engine, so this page cannot describe a model the engine has stopped using. Only the Carbon pillar is a measurement; the others are structured judgements about behaviour, and we say so rather than presenting all eleven as equally precise. Pillars you are not asked about are left out of the weighting instead of counting as zero.
