What Is Greenwashing?

Definition

Greenwashing is the practice of making misleading or unsubstantiated claims about the environmental benefits of a product, service, or company to appear more sustainable than reality.

Understanding Greenwashing

Greenwashing can range from subtle exaggeration to outright deception. The EU estimates that 53% of environmental claims made by companies in 2023 were vague, misleading, or unfounded.

Common Greenwashing Tactics

  • Hidden trade-off: Highlighting one green attribute while ignoring larger impacts
  • No proof: Claims without accessible evidence or certification
  • Vagueness: Using terms like "eco-friendly" or "natural" without specifics
  • Irrelevance: Truthful but unhelpful claims (e.g., "CFC-free" when CFCs are banned)
  • Lesser of two evils: Green claims within an inherently unsustainable category

Regulation

The EU Green Claims Directive (2024) now requires companies to substantiate environmental claims with scientific evidence and independent verification.
